alternate worlds
Children with sensory processing disorder experience the world in unexpected ways—often incomprehensible to those of us who inhabit the everyday through a different kind of perception. A feather can hurt, a lullaby may trigger distress, birthday balloons provoke overwhelming anxiety at the thought of their imminent burst. A color shifts the mood; a texture unsettles the nerves. Certain smells invade, doorknobs refuse to turn, floors cause dizziness.
These sometimes overwhelming sensory alterations shape distinct ways of inhabiting the world. They affect not only learning, but also the small rituals of life: sharing a family meal, making friends at school.
Alternate Worlds emerges as an attempt to translate these perceptual experiences into the language of images. Its aim is to make visible a unique way of relating to reality. Through a sensory exploration of the everyday, the series offers intimate scenarios in which these worlds are free to unfold.
The project awakens the senses to reveal a universe that is magical, dramatic, and mysterious—one that also bears the traces of growing up within an exceptional kind of childhood.
