60 Days by your side
In 2023, my 12-year old daughter underwent bone surgery to correct the retraction in her legs, hoping she might be able to walk again.
Osteotomies are bone cuts that help correct deformities. Pía underwent six osteotomies, eight soft tissue repairs, and grafts in each of her legs. Surgery lasted nearly eight hours.
Pía, who was diagnosed with a rare condition when she was six, was brought out of the OR with casts extending from her groin to her feet in both legs. She was hospitalized for eight days and then we brought her home.
This project, which began one morning while I was preparing her medication, became my visual record of what became our routine during the eight-weeks post-op period. I tried to capture how she perceived the world from her bed, almost unable to move and with little clarity about what was happening to her body and her surroundings. The endless sleepless nights, the monotony of the days, the constant state of dizziness, nausea, and exhaustion, the adjustment of medication in an attempt to ease her pain—these were some of the elements of this period.
I also show how this situation affected all the members of our family and our emotions along the way.
